Marijuana laws and legislation for Sofia
From 2025, cannabis will be illegal in Bulgaria for both recreational and medical purposes. The country classifies cannabis as a high-risk drug, and possession, sale, and consumption are subject to severe penalties. Even possession of small amounts can have legal consequences, reflecting Bulgaria's strict anti-drug stance. Unlike some European countries, Bulgaria has not implemented a medical cannabis program, and there is no legal framework for cannabis-based treatments.
CBD products are legal, however, provided they contain less than 0,2% THC and are derived from industrial hemp. In 2019, Bulgaria became the first EU country to officially permit the sale of CBD products made from hemp, issuing retailers a free-sale certificate that ensured compliance with EU food safety regulations.
Although cannabis laws remain strict, the country has embraced the CBD market and allowed the sale of CBD oils, food supplements and cosmetics within the legal framework.
Criminal prosecution
Police officers are very corrupt. If someone who is recognized as a foreigner offers you 20 euros, you'll likely get into even more trouble. They usually demand 1000 euros or more and will let you go for at least 100-200 euros. And offering money before being asked for it is generally not a good idea. The better advice would therefore be: NEVER smoke outdoors or in your car!
Where can you buy marijuana in Sofia?
If you are lucky or persistent enough, you might eventually meet some young (or not so young) people in Central Park, because the smell will very quickly connect you to them!
Comments
While I was having drinks at a bar, this person helped me buy high-quality, natural cannabis. Its flavor and smoothness enhanced my vacation experience. I always contact them via securedgreen28@gmail.com. Highly recommended.
Sofia Marijuana Prices
The selection of strains is not always very large – you can buy expensive indoor strains (Skunk, KC33, NL#5, Haze, Shiva) – about 10 euros per gram – without leaves or seeds, usually very potent!
The alternative is cheaper, lower-quality ruderalis from outdoor cultivation, which is fine if you're not a hydroponic indoor hash fanatic. You can get a bag full of ruderalis strains from western Bulgaria (e.g., around Petrich and Blagoevgrad) for a reasonable price of 1 to 3 euros per gram.
Brands
If you're offered "Holandets" (literally: Dutchman) or any other strain, it doesn't mean it lives up to its name—it just means it's high-quality marijuana. And what's grown outdoors around Petrich or Blagoevgrad (in fact, all over the country) has nothing to do with what's called "Ruderalis" (unless you're willing to call a four-meter-tall plant a "Ruderalis"). Our native strains would be classified more as "Indica-Sativa" hybrids. However, local growers rarely use the Indica-Sativa dichotomy.
City history:
Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It has a population of over 1,5 million, most of whom are unfortunately drug-phobic. On the other hand, there are doctors and lawyers who use marijuana. Be careful when looking for it unless you have a trusted contact.
If you can't reach your dealer, get some legal rakia instead (a traditional Bulgarian grape drink – very strong!) or maybe buy some Bulgarian Mavrud red wine. Both are freely available. The Mavrud grape variety, by the way, only grows in Bulgaria and is renowned for its exceptional quality – even French wineries can't compete!

Hashish is sometimes available on the market, but unlike in most countries, Bulgarian stoners don't consume as much hashish (compared to others) and rarely mix hashish/weed/both with tobacco. So don't be surprised if you find pre-rolled cigarettes containing only weed. Hmm, hashish + weed is okay... or just pure hashish on a glass pipe! (Yummy) – just a thought... As a non-smoker, I don't seem to find any real use for the tobacco – it's unnecessary for me, but even tobacco smokers here rarely mix their weed or hashish with tobacco – I guess that's because there's plenty of weed. Also, nobody uses smoke clips here – we roll cigarettes with a folded paper filter ;so – @; lol, room for everyone.
The tobacco doesn't seem to fit in – the bad taste of tobacco has ruined you (I'm a non-smoker). Sofia is a really beautiful city overall; the only downside is the noticeable dirt in some places. If you're planning to visit Turkey, Greece, or perhaps Romania, you could also consider a trip to Bulgaria – the capital Sofia or a cool, large coastal city like Varna, for example. Unfortunately, prices do rise somewhat in the summer due to the large number of tourists, but even so, prices in Bulgaria are much lower compared to our neighbors – Greece, Turkey, or Romania.
