Marijuana laws and legislation for Bologna
Since February 2025, Italy has had a complex legal framework governing cannabis use. Recreational cannabis remains illegal; however, possession of small amounts for personal use has been decriminalized since the 1990s and generally results in administrative penalties such as fines or the suspension of personal documents. The unauthorized sale or cultivation of cannabis is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment.
In 2016, Italy legalized the cultivation of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) with a THC content below 0,2%, leading to the emergence of the "cannabis light" industry, which offers products with low THC levels. However, at the end of 2024, the government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed a law banning products made from hemp flowers, citing public safety concerns. This move threatens the burgeoning "cannabis light" sector, which had achieved annual sales of around €500 million.
Italian regulations regarding cannabidiol (CBD) products have evolved. Since September 2023, the Ministry of Health has classified orally administered CBD products as narcotics and requires them to be dispensed only with a doctor's prescription from pharmacies. This reclassification has significant implications for the CBD market, affecting the availability and distribution of CBD oils and related products.
In the medical field, Italy legalized cannabis for therapeutic purposes in 2007. Patients with certain conditions, such as chronic pain or multiple sclerosis, can access medical cannabis through the national health system, provided they present a valid prescription. The military pharmaceutical factory in Florence is authorized to cultivate cannabis for medical purposes to ensure a controlled supply for patients.
Criminal prosecution
It depends on the officer. There are sometimes police officers with dogs at the train station and in the city center, so be careful.
If you carry no more than 5g with you, everything should be fine.
The Italian police aren't exactly known for their vigilance, and Bologna is no exception. Everyone knows where the dealers hang out, but the police never confront them. It's tolerated as long as you avoid the conspicuous tourist areas. I guess they want to make a good impression on the city.
Where to buy marijuana: On Via Zamboni (University Street), there are many drug addicts and Moroccans selling hashish and sometimes marijuana. Drug addicts usually try to sell fake or low-quality hashish (if they say something like "the police are coming" and try to hurry, they almost certainly want to sell you counterfeit stuff). Moroccans usually sell somewhat better hashish, rarely marijuana.
The best place is the university district in the east of the city. More precisely: Go to Piazza Verdi and find the Greek restaurant. Directly opposite is a small square with a few trees and phone booths. You'll almost always see dealers there (usually with their dogs). Approach them with a smile and a "Biongiorno" (a Greek greeting) and simply ask for hashish. They're very open and friendly.
Another reporter added: “I wanted to warn you not to go to Piazza Verdi because hundreds of cameras have been installed there since the new senator took office. As soon as you buy anything, you'll get caught. There's a surveillance van there that usually sits idle. I strongly advise you not to go there if you don't want to get caught. And if you do buy anything there, they usually sell you crap, real crap. There's no hashish there. The university is deserted of all the dealers in the summer because there are no classes, no students, and no hash! Everyone goes to the beach. If you want to find weed, just be a stoner and recognize the stoners. Ask them. Most of the time you'll pick one up, that's it, and peace.”
Our latest reporters say: “It’s difficult to find hashish in Piazza Verdi. Too many police officers and cameras. Just walk along Via Zamboni until you reach Piazzale Puntoni. That’s where the Moroccans are now. Better Moroccans than junkies.”
Marijuana prices and sources
It's easy to get ripped off if you know you're a foreigner. You usually pay around 10-15 euros for a gram of hashish. So be careful what you're buying before you pay.

In a crowded nightclub, this guy easily got me some natural, high-quality marijuana, which made my vacation even better. Now I contact him before every trip at securedgreen28@gmail.com. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for top-notch marijuana.

Hashish comes in many varieties, from dark, terribly brittle stuff to good hashish oil. Mostly from Morocco. The quality is really a gamble.
