Marijuana laws and legislation for Bratislava
Since February 2025, cannabis has been illegal in Slovakia for both recreational and medicinal purposes. Possession, cultivation, and distribution of cannabis are strictly prohibited and severely punished. Individuals found in possession of even small amounts can face imprisonment for three to seven years, depending on the circumstances.
In a significant policy shift, Slovakia removed cannabidiol (CBD) from its list of psychotropic substances in 2021, aligning itself with the broader standards of the European Union. This change permits the sale and use of CBD products, provided they contain less than 0,2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). However, current regulations primarily restrict the use of CBD to cosmetic products; CBD for internal use remains prohibited.
Despite these developments, Slovakia has some of the strictest cannabis laws in Europe. Reform efforts continue, but currently both recreational and medical cannabis use are illegal, and the use of CBD is restricted to specific applications.
Criminal prosecution
The import, export, and possession of marijuana are prohibited. However, it has been reported that the police are sometimes lenient towards drug offenders.

Bratislava may be the capital of the Czech Republic's sister country, Slovakia, but the picturesque city with its cobblestone streets does not share Prague's reputation as the "Amsterdam of the East".
Although there is plenty of homegrown marijuana circulating in the city – mostly of varying quality – the high fines and low tolerance for drug use are a good excuse to stick to the excellent beers and occasional shots of honey liqueur.
