Since February 2025, recreational cannabis has remained illegal in Ireland. Possession, cultivation, and distribution are prohibited under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. However, recent developments indicate a shift towards a more health-oriented approach. The government has announced plans to decriminalize possession of small amounts of drugs, including cannabis, for first-time offenders. Despite the programme's introduction, access remains limited, and ongoing discussions aim to expand its availability to more patients.
Ireland permits the sale and use of cannabidiol (CBD) products, provided they contain less than 0,2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is not classified as a medical device by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) and therefore cannot be prescribed as a treatment option.

Criminal prosecution

However, from personal experience, I can say that a friend of mine was taken to court in Athlone for possessing just one joint. Stay discreet and in private places, and you'll probably avoid any trouble.
Where can you buy marijuana?
There's plenty of weed around. Your best bet is to try the bars where more young people hang out. Otherwise, just keep your eyes open; the right people will find you. However, there are also a lot of "soap bars" in the city, so check what it is before you buy. There's also plenty of good weed, so be careful. There's also a lot of "gel" weed. This is made by spraying the buds with a chemical while they're growing to make them moister and heavier. When it dries, it turns into a powder that looks like THC crystals. You can easily tell the difference, though, and the gel dust isn't as harmful; it just stings your throat.
