Marijuana laws and legislation for Athens
Since February 2025, Greece has maintained a strict legal stance regarding the recreational use of cannabis. Possession, sale, and cultivation of cannabis for recreational purposes are illegal. Individuals found with small amounts for personal use can face up to five months in prison. However, if the offense is not repeated within five years, it may not be recorded on the criminal record. Penalties for selling or distributing cannabis are more severe and can include up to eight years in prison, and life imprisonment for individuals in public positions, such as teachers or doctors, who are involved in such activities.
In 2017, Greece legalized medical cannabis, permitting its use for certain medical conditions. The following year, the government lifted the ban on the cultivation and production of medical cannabis, allowing pharmaceutical companies to legally grow and process it. Despite these advances, access to medical cannabis remains restricted, and recreational use is still prohibited.
Regarding cannabidiol (CBD) products, Greece permits their sale and use, provided they are derived from EU-approved hemp varieties and contain less than 0,2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD products are widely available through licensed retailers and are gaining popularity in the wellness market.
Criminal prosecution
Be aware that you might be arrested. Greek police don't usually look for this, but if they speak to you for another reason, there is a possibility you could be arrested.
Where can you buy marijuana in Athens?
"Marijuana, hashish and everything else can be found very easily in Geraniou Street, Menandrou Street, Evripidou Street and Theatrou Square (all just a few steps from Omonia Square (the most central square in the city))."

In summer, it's generally much easier to get hold of something. You can smell hashish/weed on almost every beach in and around Athens. Good spots in summer are Kavouri and Limanakia beaches… you're sure to find people smoking there… and they're usually willing to share and/or sell some.
Another reporter added: “Street dealing is not common in Athens. You can find some legal spots. However, high-quality weed from the Monastiraki area, sold by Albanians or Roma, is not recommended. It's full of seeds and won't get you high. As everywhere, the usual rules apply: never spend money before you've seen the weed. The chances of getting even average weed on the street are very slim.”

What should you do if you are a heavy smoker in Athens?
Try to meet a local dealer, ask a Greek friend, or contact young people.
Find a dealer, then place the order (ask about their offer and prices) and then wait (maybe even a few hours) until you receive the stuff and pay the price.
Most transactions in Athens take place behind closed doors. Be aware of the police. You're safer dealing with Greeks, not Albanians or Roma (this isn't racism). Never carry too much marijuana or hashish. The police can arrest you even for a single joint. Avoid smoking in public.

If you go to a dealer (not on the street), you'll find various strains. There's high-quality weed from Albania for 6–8 euros, Greek weed for 15 euros per gram (hard to find), skunk for 15 euros, hashish for 10–12 euros, charas for 16 euros, etc.

Genuine Greek marijuana has become difficult to find in recent years. Kalamata or similarly potent Greek marijuana is found in villages far from Athens, or one needs good connections to get hold of the good stuff. Marijuana marijuana is quite common in Athens.
If you go to a dealer (not on the street), you can find various types of marijuana. There's low-quality marijuana from Albania for 6 to 8 euros, Greek marijuana for 15 euros per gram (hard to find), skunk for 15 euros, and hashish for 10 to 12 euros.

The problem with Athens and hashish is that you need to know someone to get your hands on the good stuff and stay safe. Always be wary of the police, never smoke in clubs, and tourists should be very careful when smoking in public.
