Tolerance for smokers

Legal status:
Possession of marijuana for personal use is no longer a criminal offense in Portugal, and the judicial authorities rarely prosecute marijuana smokers. Any dose that lasts less than ten days is legal.
Criminal prosecution
The police rarely approach anyone, but if someone (usually drunk) causes trouble, they get beaten up. Just stay calm, and everything will be fine.
The police aren't very keen on tourists smoking marijuana or hashish. However, if you do get arrested, bribery might be the best way to clear things up (a 50-euro note is perfectly sufficient). I wouldn't recommend smoking a joint on the street; that would be trouble. If you encounter a police officer, it's best to simply put the joint out.
Where to buy marijuana in the Algarve: Poorer Black people on the street will try to sell you "hashish," but it's always low-quality hashish laced with candle wax. There are hundreds of UK reps trying to lure customers into clubs and bars. They're really easygoing, and you WILL meet them. If you ask subtly, they can probably get you some or show you where to find it. Usually, it's high quality.
Marijuana is very difficult to obtain in Portugal. Although various shady-looking people will offer you "weed" on the street, do NOT buy anything from them. They charge high prices and sell you junk (often just herbs or leaves).
Hashish is much easier to get. Just look for stoners and ask them. If you see a head shop, they can usually help you. Again: DO NOT buy the hashish offered to you on the street. It's extremely poor quality and they'll rip you off.
Marijuana prices in the Algarve and where to buy it:
Candle wax and bars of soap cost between €1 and €10 per gram (tourist prices). Good hashish costs between €10 and €20 per eighth. Cheaper than in England, and reasonable for the quality.
The average price for marijuana, when available, is 10 euros per gram.

Prices for hashish in the Algarve:
Hashish is readily available and much cheaper than marijuana. For at least €10 you can usually get an eighth (3,5 g).
Brands:
The marijuana is generally of medium to high quality, although the selection of strains, etc., is limited. The hashish is the lower-grade "soap bar" hashish available throughout the UK and Europe.
