Marijuana laws and legislation for Aix-en-Provence
Strict cannabis laws will come into effect in France in 2025. Recreational use will remain illegal and will be punishable by a €200 fine. The government continues to strongly oppose legalization. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau emphasized the link between drug use and gang violence.
Despite calls for reform, such as a national referendum proposed by the mayor of Grenoble, the French government prioritizes drug control and prosecution over legalization.
Medical cannabis is currently undergoing a trial phase in France, which began in 2021 and has been extended until July 31, 2025. The program, involving approximately 1.800 patients, aims to evaluate cannabis-based treatments for conditions such as epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and side effects of chemotherapy.
The results of this study could influence future laws on medical marijuana in France. Currently, however, cannabis remains strictly regulated, and there are no plans for broader legalization.
Criminal prosecution
Although the police don't tolerate marijuana smoking here, smoking on the street is relatively safe. On a summer day, you'll see several groups of young people smoking hashish in the city. As long as you don't buy it from "Le Rasta," you're relatively safe.
Le Rasta is the biggest hashish dealer in the city, selling to hundreds of customers. His police record is over an inch thick. He has a network of apartments throughout the city where he'll lead you into a corridor for the deal. However, the police are swarming around his house and arresting his customers.
Where can you buy marijuana?
Hashish originated in Marseille and is widely distributed. gras It is very rarely available, and when it is, it is usually expensive and of inferior quality. Arab youths sell hashish in Parc Jordan or around Parc La Torse.
In the side streets off the Cours Mirabeau, especially between O'sullivan's Pub and O'shannon's, ask Arabs outside the "Netgamers" internet café. Hashish is called "shit" here. Continue along the top of the Cours Mirabeau to find a shisha bar called "Arabesc".
Do not attempt to buy hashish in Jas-de-Boufan. At best, you will receive compacted dirt; at worst, you will be robbed at gunpoint. Never hand over any money until you have the hashish in your hand. Some Arabs devise elaborate schemes to swindle you out of your money.
Marseille is a 30-minute train ride from Aix-en-Provence. You can find better deals in the suburbs there, but you really need to speak fluent French, as you practically don't need any French skills to shop in Aix.

Marijuana varieties in Aix-en-Provence:
Most of the hashish here is of good quality, but the bar of soap doesn't seem to be from Marseille. Never believe what a dealer tells you about the quality of his products; it will always be exaggerated.
Further information
It's worth knowing where to buy cigarettes "under the counter." Most shops that sell cigarettes close at 7 p.m. However, there's "La Cintra," a 24-hour Mafia-run bar near La Rotonde, where cigarettes are sold under the counter around the clock. Many other bars and cafes in the city also sell cigarettes under the counter, which is quite common.
